His cartoons are regularly published in "Herkese Bilim Teknoloji" -a weekly science and technology magazine in Turkey. He has been Member of the Cartoonists’ Association of Turkey since 1986 (also as an Admin Board member in 2005). His drawings have appeared in various Turkish maths and science books as well as in Bilim ve Utopya, Bilim ve Gelecek, Cumhuriyet Bilim ve Teknik (1995-2015), Karikatur, EMO Dergi, Karikaturk, Matematik Dunyasi (Math World) and Homur in Turkey and in the American Journal of Irreproducible Results, Pittnews, IEEE The Institute, IEEE Pulse (formerly the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine), IEEE Region 8 Newsletter, IEEE Women in Engineering, IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine, IEEE Signal Processing Magazine and IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, URSI Radio Science Bulletin. In June 2000, as a part of the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP-2000, Istanbul, Turkey), he organized a competition and exhibition titled "Humour in Science, Mathematics, Communications and Information Technology" with a special emphasis on "Humour in Signal Processing." The contest attracted submissions by 238 cartoonists from 44 countries. Afterwards, with the cooperation of the Cartoon and Humour Museum of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Tayfun Akgul coordinated the production and distribution of a CD-book with 180 cartoons. While at Drexel University, Philadelphia, USA, he organized three humour-related events with the title "International Fool-Proof Research Symposium" on April 1st in 1998, 1999, and 2000. Some of the various cartoon exhibitions and shows he has had of his own are as follows;
His first cartoon book, "Bilimum”, was published by the Cartoonists’ Association of Turkey in 2004. ![]() He has two books in Turkish "Dortkose Yazilar” (Quad-Essays, 2003) and "Dortkose Mektuplar” (Quad-Letters, 2003) collections of mathematics, engineering and science related humorous short stories. A collection of his cartoons was published in a book entitled "FenniKarikaturler” (ScientifiCartoons) by the Chamber of Electrical Engineers of Turkey in 2011 (first edition) and 2015 (second edition).
![]() He was Member-at-Large in the IEEE Publication Services and Products Boards for the 2006-2008 and 2008-2011 terms. He also served as Member of IEEE Ethics and Member Conduct Committee for three consecutive terms between 2012-2014. He still teaches various undergraduate and graduate level courses at ITU, conducts research, and publishes (with his students and colleagues) scientific articles on various signal/image/geosignal and array processing topics, including blind deconvolution problems, underwater acoustics, ambient noise analysis and noise characterization, compressive sensing, higher order statistics and spectra, radon gas release and seismic activity modelling, direction-of-arrival problems, 1/f processes, scaling concepts, face recognition and caricatures-photos matching problems. |
